Simple yet sophisticated, and the perfect backdrop for almost every theme of decor, grays have become a go-to for minimalists and bold-colorists alike. This year, brand’s are honoring the world’s need for more zen. “For 2019, we’ve observed an overall mood of retreating to the home as a place of comfort and quietude, where we can escape from the chaos and noise of daily life,” says Andrea Magno, Color and Design Expert at Benjamin Moore (whose Color of the Year pays homage to this mood). “Our Metropolitan AF-690 is an ideal bedroom color as it is soft and calming, and especially gorgeous when paired with fabrics such as linen and cashmere-think of the beautiful layering of sheets and blankets on a bed.”

The time for underestimating this color is over-or at least while 2019 has us craving hues that feel more grounding. Either way, experts are predicting the earthy shade will make a comeback. “We’ll been seeing shades like Behr’s Kindling N200-6, a rich, elevated taupe, as a popular pick for bedrooms in the new year,” says Color Expert and VP of Color and Creative Services at Behr, Erika Woelfel. You may also notice the brown trend peeking in through varying shades of terracotta, like Behr’s Mars Red PPU2-11 which Woelfel notes as the perfect “warm, cozy, and sophisticated choice for any bedroom painting project.”

From the great big ocean to the wide open sky, there’s no color quite as relaxing as blue. And thanks to the franticness of our everyday, you can expect to see the color making its way well into bedrooms this year, from walls to trims and ceilings. “I love blues in a bedroom because of the peaceful effect they have,” says Vancouver-based designer, Gillian Segal. Her shade of the moment? A pale, frosty blue-gray like Benjamin Moore’s Cloudy Sky or Boothbay Gray. And if your walls are already part of the blue crew, but you’re looking to play it up this year, she suggests pairing the shade with burnt orange (for those feeling bold!) or layering in lighter tints of blue and creams, through accent pieces like art work, for a soft, serene look.

If you want to take color pairing up a notch, both Segal and Magno are fans of contrasting trims and ceilings as a way to add more color without going all in. “A pale blue such as Benjamin Moore’s Smoke 2122-40 is a perfect complement to a ceiling as it is light and airy,” Magno says. “It can also complement other colors used in a room.”

Trying to achieve a color scheme that’s equal parts playful and elegant? Then you’ll love the pops of purple making appearances in bedrooms for 2019. “As majority of bedrooms are under low light to help us rest, warm undertones, like dark mystical purple, Valspar’s Metropolis Lilac 4001-6C, set the right ambiance for relaxation,” says Valspar Senior Color Designer, Sue Kim.

If you’re not quite ready to go so dark, Kim also suggests Valspar’s more subtle Midsummer Twilight 4001-3C. “The gray undertones in this soft and dusty lilac shade bring a calm and cozy feeling to a bedroom, while working well with low lighting,” she says. “These shades also evoke stability and strength, sparking introspection and growth.” And really, who wouldn’t want all of that for the new year?
